Silence is golden.
When the world is loud and chaotic and confusing, what can we do? Sometimes what we need is nothing- as in the absence of things. We need silence, we need stillness.
When is the last time you were really alone with just your thoughts? With no distractions, nothing else to listen to or focus your attention on?
I was thinking about this the other day. How even when I am driving, walking, cleaning, cooking, pottering around the house I am always listening to something- a podcast or music. Sometimes we just need some free space without any noice or distractions to think, to process, to just be.
Without this space, it can be easy to feel overwhelmed and overstimulated. Our world has constant news, updates, noise, notifications. So many demands on our attention from all different directions. More than the human brain is really equipped to handle.
We weren’t meant to be able to take in this much information all of the time. No wonder we feel overwhelmed, rushed, stressed, anxious.
What can we do? Well every time you come to class or step on your mat at home or even slow down and take five deep breaths, you are doing it. You are making space for yourself. It might feel challenging or frustrating sometimes, precisely because we aren’t used to it.
