Little moments of presence.

I’ll venture to say many of us feel short on time, rushed off our feet, with a to-do list perpetually a mile long. Finding time for a yoga class once a week might be a challenge sometimes. But time to rest everyday might feel impossible.

What can we do? Start small. Take the pressure off yourself. Really we are looking for small ways to do two of the things we speak a lot of in class- 1. be more present in our lives and 2. notice small things each day that bring us little or big joy.

And maybe that is more of what we need to focus on off the yoga mat as well. How to find more small moments of presence each day. How to pay attention more. How to be here for life as it is happening all around us.

I was listening to a podcast the other day on my walk and it was talking about how little we just sit and do nothing. Zone out. Stare into space. Maybe meditation feels like a challenge or work. But what about just sitting and doing nothing?

Instead we grab for our phones when we are in line at the supermarket, waiting for an appointment, even on the toilet. It’s like we can’t bear to be with our own thoughts. No wonder why a yin or restorative class can feel so weird and uncomfortable if you haven’t done it before.

Our brains need this space. They need room to stretch, to process, to let thoughts untangle and slow down. A break from the constant input and overstimulation.

Consider what a little moment of presence could look like for you. One so small you can practicie it everyday. Maybe it is slowly sipping your morning coffee or tea without multitasking. Maybe it is stopping to notice the afternoon sunlight as it streams in through your kitchen window. Maybe it is pausing to observe the birds flit around outside. Maybe it is savoring a morning sunrise or evening sunset.
